A comfortable BE-bird watching tour in the Danube Delta, Dobrudsja and Black Sea coast from 13th June until 21st June 2015
Introduction bird watching tour Rumenia
A comfortable bird watching tour in the mouth of the Danube river, Dobroedzja and the Black Sea coast. The mouth of the Danube is well known. This area is more than 100 times the area of the Dutch Biesbosch, and famous among bird watchers. It is the breeding area of lots of threatened and protected species of birds, halting place of many migrating birds and birds staying the winterperiod, as well, many ducks and geese. You will find there the Dalmatian pelican and white (or pink) pelicans as well, red-necked grebe, ferruginous duck, roller, grey-headed woodpecker, olivaceous warbler and many others. In an area where great warbler is never far away. In the south of this area you find the very special Dobroedzja. This is a unique steppe aria at the western side of the Black Sea. This steppe and de Black Sea coast is a splendid area for birdwatching. After your one week’s stay in this region you will return home with an extended list of birds , turtles amphibians, plants like orchids, ephedra, adonis, wild peony, etc. There is always a chance to spot a wild cat.
A very comfortable bird tour
For 4 days we stay in a hotelboat in the delta. This boat has 10 huts with twin beds. The hotelboat will be slept forward by a tugboat, together with an other boat and some rowing vessels. From the hotelboat we hear constantly the great warbler we see night herons, squacco herons, green sandpiper, spotted sandpiper, kingfisher and also rose and Dalmatian pelicans, purple herons and many others. In the small boat we go looking for birds in the little ditches and river arms for an overday view. We see many great crested grebes, also the black Ibis, the white-tailed sea-eagle, both sorts of pelicans, the squacco heron, whiskered tern and white-winged tern, the pygmy cormorant, cormorant, beardid reedling, penduline tit. Mostly we have lunch in the boat and always dinner on board of the boat. In the evenings we can have a view from the boat on the birds such as baillons’s crake, unless the noise of many green frogs or treefrogs would be louder. This is all possible while you enjoy your drink on board. Everything on board is at your full service.
The delta consists of some main rivers, which we leave as soon as possible, and bigger and smaller canals, bigger and smaller lakes and many woods and reeds. At some locations we see villages, on places we call “grinduls’. This grinduls never overflow, and this is the reason why people settled at these places. We will visit these villages in order to look for the birds such as olivaceous warbler, grey-headed warbler, storks, etc. These villages are the beautiful exponents of the time which stands still. Former life is still alive. Everybody has his own cattle, a big garden with potatoes, vegetables and an orchard. People make wine of the grapes which they grow themselves. On the grinduls people have geese, goats and cows. The big grinduls look more like riverdunes with colonies of breeding red-footed falcons and rook, and sometimes a couple of long-eared owls. We have a very good chance to see stone curlew
The Dobrudzja and the Black Seacoast
For some days we drive with a comfortable bus in the area of the Dobroedzja and the coast of the Black Sea. Our overnight stay is in a new and modern Hotel in Tulcea at the side of the Donau. The Dobroedzja is a rather flat agricultural area with some rocky hills, steppes, oakwoods, with lakes and lagunes. On our way we see lots of storks’ nests. In some of the nests live Spanish sparrows. It is not uncommon to see long-legged buzzards, bee-eaters, roller, lesser grey shrike, corn bunting, pratincole when looking outside while driving by buss. These latter mentioned are breeding in a colony in the neighbourhood of Histria. Maybe we are lucky to see a pair of black-winged pratincole and white-tailed lapwings in the colony. Calandra lark and short-toed lark are common here. Near Histria is also a small population of paddyfield warbler which we have always seen in the last years, although we had to work for it. We will also visit the hill Enisala, where we possibly could see peregrine and rosy starling. If not we mostly find rosy starlings in another place. It is always uncertain since they are very gregarious and they change breeding places all the time. Near Enisala we find lagoons with dunes and the beach. We will see sandwich terns and gull-billed terns and several kinds of sandpipers, and a reasonable chance to see a marsh sandpiper and broad-billed sandpiper.
The Macin hills are the highest hills in the Dobroedzja. If we didn’t see the isabelline wheatear until now, we cannot miss it here. Also we will see the pied wheatear, barred warbler, stone curlew, rock thrush, longlegged buzzard, Syrian and middle spotted woodpecker). The saker falcon has here a breedingplace. Thus there is a big chance to see this beautiful bird. Babadag is a Turkish name, which reminds us to the time of the Turkish occupation. There is still a Turkish minority in this area. The Sultan planted new trees, after destroying the original woods. These new woods are getting more and more interesting for birds as ortolan bunting, barred warbler and sombre tit and the red-breasted flycatcher. Above the trees we can regularly see levant sparrow hawk, booted eagle, short-toed eagle, lesser spotted eagle.
In the delta we move with the hotelboat and we make short excursions with smaller boats in water with difficult acces. During the excursions in the mainland we drive in a luxuary touringcaoch in the areas with lots of birds. We are in the open air as much as possible to enjoy short and light hikings.
Accommodation and service
It is for the Rumanian crew a matter of honour to optimalize their service. This means that the dinners and lunches are served with utmost care and of good quality. The hotelboat and the hotel in Tulcea as well, are good quality accommodations and always cleaned.
