Day 3 Around 9.00 pm we leave for the Selous Game Reserve. Without stops the drive to the borders of Selous will last about 7 hours. Part of the road is ashphalted but the largest part we have to follow dusty bumpy dirt roads. In order to arrive in time at the border of the park, we will have some short stops, where. We will make a boat trip to explore the Rufiji River in the afternoon.

The Selous Game reserve is the largest protected area (50.000 km2) in the world. Two big rivers are the lifelines of the park: The Great Ruaha River and the Rufiji River. The area north of the rivers is accessible for visitors. This accessible part of the area is about 10% of the total area. Most prevailing animals are: antilopes, baboons and buffalos, crocodiles, lions, hippos, Thomson antilopes, wild dogs, zebras and pig.

We will make some guided walks in order to see the mammals, plants for medical use, birds and a Masai tribe will be visited.

It is a great pleasure to stay and walk for some days in the Selous Game Reserve. We explore the Selous Park for the birds and mammals we missed and we leave the park at the end of the fifth day from the western side. We have an overnight stay at the border of the Uluguru Mountains.

At the end of the day we will check in in the hotel in Morogoro, a lively town on the mainroad of South Tanzania.

Mikumi National Park.

Masai

The Mikumi National Park is known because of its enormous grass areas along the Mkata river. Special mammal species of Mikumi : eland (the largest elandspecie of the world), and the big kudu. There are big tribes of buffalos in the park we could possibly see around 400 species of birds and also many waders. We wil make a gamedrive by car in order to look for the special eland and the big diversity of birds.

Subsequently, we will drive to the border of the Uluguru Mountains. The next morning we will leave for the Udzungwa Mountains. In this area we make a walk under guidance of a ranger and we will explore the area for Usambara weaver, banded sunbird, Kipengere seedeater, iringa akalat, kilombero weaver en rufous-winged sunbird.

The Udzangwa National Park is not known for its wild animals, but known for the trees, plants, the birds, most special monkeys and the enormous waterfall. It is spectacular to see how the water if falling down for more than 170 meters. A visit to this park is more than worthwhile and we will stay here only the morning. Then we will be on our  way to Ruaha National Park. On our way we will stop in the Baobab valley and looking for special birds. Because the roads are not as good everywhere we could do the tour to Raha in 2 days and stay the night in Iringa, A visit to the Isimilla Stonehange could be part of the tour. Then we will follow our road to the most beautiful and quiet park Ruaha.

The Ruaha National Park is known for its big tribes of lions, many bird species and many species of antilopes. It is fantastic to watch the animals along the borders of the river, which come here to drink. The best period for observing the wild animals is the dry season from May to December. The  best period for bird watching is the more humid months November until May.

On the penultimate day we will have a game drive by car in the morning and we will have a local flight to Dar es Salaam. In this town we will take the time to refresh and have a meal before the flight back to Amsterdam.

Photography

Many animals are remarkably tame and easy to approach . During this tour we have continuously good chances to take photos.
